Release of the Implementation Strategy

The scope and goals of SOLAS are outlined in the SOLAS 2015-2025 Science Plan and Organisation. With regard to the Implementation Strategy, SOLAS chose to use a pragmatic approach and proposes a strategy over a period of 2 years at a time. The document is structured around three major sections: 1) events; 2) established working groups and their activities; and 3) working groups under development. The nature of the exercise obviously makes the document a moving target that needs constant update, that is what SOLAS intends to do by having a live web-based document only. The Implementation Strategy will be updated and revised periodically.

2017 Joint IAPSO-IAMAS-IAGA Assembly

The 2017 Joint IAPSO-IAMAS-IAGA Assembly will take place in Cape Town, South Africa from 27 August to 1 September 2017.

There are two sessions of particular interest for the SOLAS community, submit an abstract by 12 March 2017:

M01: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics for the 21st Century
Convenors: James Drummond, Melita Keywood , John P. Burrows
With subsessions on Multi-scale transport processes or Tracer transport processes over complex terrain; Advances of science in delivering atmospheric services for science and society; Air quality, health and ecosystem impacts; Air-snow-ice interactions; Atmosphere ocean interactions and exchane of trace gases; Biomass burning; Global stratospheric ozone; Polar ozone; Climate chemistry interactions and feedback; and Laboratory studies

M06: Oceans as a source and sink for aerosols and related feedbacks
Convenor: Zev Levin
Co-convenors: Ilan Koren, Paul DeMott
Production of CCN and IN from the ocean and the role of aerosols like dust and pollution in affecting the ocean acidity.
This session is perfect opportunity to collaborate with the SOLAS community. It can link research related to marine ecosystems and aerosols in both ways (i.e. how ecosystems affect aerosol fluxes and properties and how aerosols affect the ecosystem) and on the complex interactions with clouds (i.e marine aerosols affect clouds and clouds affect the ecosystem).

Conference on 'Shipping and the Environment - From Regional to Global Perspectives'

The international conference on 'Shipping and the Environment - From Regional to Global Perspectives' will take place on October 24-25, 2017, in Gothenburg, Sweden. This conference will focus on scientific findings on impacts of shipping on environment and their application in policy, marine spatial planning and the maritime transport sector. The event is jointly organised by the Bonus project SHEBA and SOLAS.
Download the first announcement here and if you are interested, register here in order to obtain in the next month further information about the conference!
