  • Download and read issues 5 and 6 of our SOLAS event report.

    • Issue 5 reports on the 'Frontiers in ocean-atmosphere exchange: Air-sea interface and fluxes of mass and energy' workshop that took place in Cargèse, Corsica, France in May 2017.


    • Issue 6 reports on a workshop series on SOLAS Science and Society, that took place in Brussels, Belgium in October 2016, in Monaco in March 2017 and recently in Rome, Italy in June 2017.

  • SOLAS is pleased to inform you that Li Li, the new project officer based in Xiamen University, Xiamen, China, joined the International Project Office (IPO) on 1 September. Welcome Li Li!
    Li Li is a marine ecologist and biologist, who obtained her Master of Philosophy degree from Xiamen University on global distribution of virioplankton. She received her doctoral degree from the City University of Hong Kong on drug screening with transgenic fish. Li Li is a scuba diver with diving experience in many countries and voluntary working experiences in non-governmental organisation.

  • From 14 - 18 August the SOLAS IPO welcomed Alina Correll, a school intern who learned all about SOLAS and the life as a marine researcher. Read the report on her experiences in the IPO and at the research institute here.

  • After 12 years of work for SOLAS in UK and Germany, Emilie Breviere, will leave SOLAS by end of September. She received many farewell messages and she would like to say a big thank you to everyone!

    • Announce your SOLAS relevant session for the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting, Portland, US, 11-16 February in the next e-news!

    • SOLAS will have an exhibit booth, so please plan to come and visit us!

  • The international conference on 'Shipping and the Environment - From Regional to Global Perspective' 24-25 October 2017, Gothenburg, Sweden, will be followed by a SOLAS shipping workshop, 26 October. The aim of this workshop is to develop plans for SOLAS research focusing on shipping, and to bring together groups of researchers keen to contribute to this research. Register now here.

  • SOLAS was hosting a session during the IAPSO-IAMAS-IAGA conference, A tribute to Roland von Glasow, 27 August-1 September 2017, Cape Town, South Africa. A SOLAS event report will follow on that.

  • Ocean Sciences Meeting, Portland, USA, 11-16 February 2018. Submit an abstract to a SOLAS relevant session by TODAY, 6 September.

  • V congress of physical oceanography, meteorology and climate of the Eastern South Pacific, Concepcion, Chile, 6-10 November 2017. Submit an abstract by TODAY, 6 September.

  • International Workshop on Marine & Atmospheric Sciences in West Africa, embedded in the inauguration of the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo, Cabo Verde, 12-17 November. Register by 15 September.

  • International Arctic Change 2017 Conference at the Quebec City Convention Centre, Québec, Canada, 11-15 December 2017. Submit an abstract by 22 September.

OCTOBER:

  • ASLO 2018 Summer Meeting, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, 10-15 June 2018. Submit a session proposal by 1 October.

  • Ocean Mesoscale Eddy Interactions with the Atmosphere, in conjunction with the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting, Portland, OR, US, 17-18 February 2018. Register by 6 October.

  • European Research Council Starting Grants - any nationality with 2 to 7 yrs after completion of PhD for 5 years. Submit an application by 17 October.

  • International Congress on Climate Change and its Impacts – ICCCI, Huaraz, Peru, 29 November - 1 December 2017. Register for the student registration by 10 October and regular registration by 25 October.

  • Published literature

    • Launch of the latest phase in the evolution of Analysis, Integration and Modelling of the Earth System (AIMES), which will draw on research from the social sciences to explore how humans influence the planet's dynamics. More information are available here.

    • IOCCP as Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Biogeochemistry Expert Panel released the GOOS Biogeochemistry Essential Ocean Variable (EOV) Specification Sheets version 2.0. For more information read here.

    • The International Group for Marine Ecological Time Series (IGMETS) has released its report entitled “What are Marine Ecological Time Series telling us about the ocean? A status report.” Download the report here.

    • The latest issue of the Past Global Changes Magazine (vol. 25, no 2, August 2017), titled "Sustaining Earth’s Biodiversity", is now available here.

  • Funding opportunities

    • Future Earth’s travel grants provide early career professionals with the opportunity to participate in events all around the world and contribute actively to the Future Earth initiative. More details see here.

    • European Research Council Starting Grants for researchers of any nationality with two to seven years experience since the completion of their PhD may be awarded up to € 1.5 million for a period of 5 years. Apply by 17 October 2017 here.

  • Miscellaneous

    • Nominations for the Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC) Scientific Steering Group is now open. The deadline for nominations is 30 September 2017. More information available here.

    • The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) is seeking input from the global ocean science community about the effectiveness of SCOR communications. Complete the survey here.
