SOLAS Statement on Geoengineering announced

The many dimensions and consequences of human perturbation of the climate system pose enormous and unprecedented challenges to human society. In light of widespread international agreement to limit increasing global temperatures, policy decisions will be made in the near future about climate intervention. It is essential that this decision making process be informed by sound and robust science. The SOLAS community has specific expertise and can provide critical insights into interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean, and therefore, SOLAS has a responsibility to make a multi-faceted contribution to geoengineering discussions.

Find the Position Statement here.

Congratulations to Cristina Facchini

New IFREMER 1992 - 2017 Ocean Heat Flux Time Series

IFREMER satellite group is pleased to announce that the new release of the turbulent heat flux  field analyses estimated from various remotely sensed data, including scatterometer and radiometer retrievals, , are  now available.  The determination of latent and sensible heat fluxes as well as of the related bulk variables, is based on the use of the European Space Agency (ESA) Ocean Heat Flux (OHF) project (website). Data are calculated as daily estimates over free ice global oceans, with regular space grid of 0.25 degree in latitude and longitude. More than 25 years (Jan 1992-Jun 2017) of daily data are freely available here. The latter includes the full data as well a short documentation describing briefly the new product and the related accuracy.

Preliminary tool aiming at the visualization of data is available here.
Feedbacks are very welcome, please send to Abderrahim Bentamy.

Version 6 of the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas now available

The Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) is a synthesis activity by international marine carbon scientists (>100 contributors) with annual public releases. SOCAT version 6 has 23.4 million quality-controlled in situ surface ocean fCO2 (fugacity of carbon dioxide) measurements from 1957 to 2017 for the global oceans and coastal seas, as well as additional calibrated sensor fCO2 measurements.

Data submission for version 7 ends 15 January 2019; Version 7 quality control ends 31 March 2019. More information here.
