SOLAS update

Registration open: CATCH Open Science Workshop, 7-8 December 2019, University of California, Berkeley, USA
The SOLAS co-sponsored CATCH (Cryosphere and Atmospheric Chemistry) Open Science Workshop will be held on 7-8 December 2019 at the University of California in Berkeley, USA. An important objective of this workshop is to gather ideas and community support to develop CATCH working groups in order to focus research on emerging CATCH topics and research challenges.

The international Shipping and the Environment II conference focusses on the environmental impacts of shipping and their coupling to the development of the maritime transport sector, policies and maritime spatial planning, and will be held from
4-6 September 2019 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

WCRP Strategic Plan 2019-2028 approved

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Strategic Plan 2019-2028 was developed by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee of 2018. It was updated by the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee of 2019 and approved by all three WCRP Co-sponsors in June 2019.

SOCAT version 2019 released

The SOLAS endorsed Surface Ocean CO₂ Atlas (SOCAT) is a synthesis activity for quality-controlled, surface ocean fCO₂ (fugacity of carbon dioxide) observations by the international marine carbon research community (>100 contributors).
SOCAT version 2019 was released on the 18th of June 2019, containing data submitted on or before 15th of January 2019. New data submissions are welcome at any time, and will be included in the next SOCAT release.

  • Published literature

    • The Tropic Pacific Observing System (TPOS) 2020 second report has been released. The Second Report builds off the First Report; it covers new areas of review, expands on areas that were not adequately covered in the First Report and provides additional detail of the Backbone observing system. Progress with implementation and the pathway to bring new technology into the Backbone are also discussed. Read the reports here.
  • Funding opportunities

    • The European Geosciences Union welcomes conference proposals on solar system and planetary processes (Angioletta Coradini Conferences), on biochemical processes in the Earth system (Mary Anning Conferences), as well as on selected topics of geosciences with a socio-economic impact for developing regions (Alexander von Humboldt Conferences). Submit a proposal by 15 August 2019. More information here.
    • The intergovernmental funding programme COST has a continuous open call for networking activities. Proposals should include networks of scientists from a minimum of 7 COST countries, of which at least 3 must be Inclusiveness Target Countries. Next Collection Date is 5 September 2019.   • Miscellaneous

    • Manuscripts are being invited for a special issue in Acta Oceanologica Sinica. All manuscripts about the ocean dynamics, environment, air-sea interactions over the Indian Ocean (including the Maritime Continent and the Southern Ocean connected to the Indian Ocean) are welcome. Manuscripts on interdisciplinary studies related to physics or dynamics, interactions between ocean basins, and ocean-land interactions related to the Indian Ocean are also welcome.
